Bubbling Over with Kindness

For Random Act of Kindness Day today (1st September) we decided to give the whole school bubbles for free!

We made bubble wands in secret to surprise everyone with, and gave out the bubbles before school and at morning tea time.  It made everyone smile!

Being kind made us feel very happy and awesome.  We had fun too, blowing bubbles and bouncing the bubbles on our gloves.

We gave out RAK'D cards to remind people to pass kindness on.

Term 2, Here We Come!

We've hit the ground running here in Room 5 for Term 2.  Two new class members, science experiments already underway, swimming started, and lots more to look forward to.

Some of our reading groups are working on becoming more confident with how we tackle new words we haven't seen before, and the 'tools' we can use to work things out when we read.  Like with any task, being able to choose the right tool for the job is a crucial skill.  Here's a photo of a group using the tools from our Reader's Toolkit during a reading session.

We've also been learning about health and germs, and had a great time making some 'Monster Germ' art to help decorate the upcoming Book Fair at school. The Book Fair starts on Wednesday so be sure to come on in and check it out!  Here are some of Room 5's  blow-art monster germs:

Globalization

As we continue with our Inquiry, our next questions is:

What do people around the Globe, do the same as us?

We have been looking in books and at video clips on youtube.

We have come up with some initial ideas to answer this question, as you can see on our brainstorm below.

Getting Ready for Market Day

Getting our posters ready

After working out how we were going to display them, we set and waited for our helpers and customers on Market Day.

Busy Bees!

What a busy few weeks we have had in Room 5.  We have worked so hard, with the help of many parents, towards our annual Ag Day.  A huge thank you to all the parents who sent along supplies and pitched in to help out not only with our ag day art, but on the day as well.  What a success it was!

Here is some of our art in progress:

 Super Snails

Totally Tea Cups (mini succulent gardens)

Our air-dry clay 'carvings' drying out

The finished product all painted.

We were also lucky enough to have a number of visitors to the school, including The NZ Playhouse performing Jack Flash and the Jumping Beanstalk:

We also had the The Minstrel visit, who is always so much fun:

And we got a chance to learn some cricket skills with Matt Good courtesy of NZ Cricket:

We are now looking forward to the last few weeks of school and all the learning and fun that will bring!

Playing on our playground markings

From chalk to walk - Room 5's Inquiry in Term 3

After all our hard work, doing surveys, and research, and trials, and then more surveys - Room 5 came up with their final choices for new playground markings for our School.  After presenting our ideas to our Board of Trustees, and getting their approval (Yay! Yippee! Yahoo!), Mr Staples then got to work with our plans during the holidays so we came back to...

... and during last week, Mr Staples worked hard to finish making our plans a reality, including our fabulous Te Reo counting Taniwha.

Thanks Mr Staples for your painting work.  Thank you also to all of the children of Ohau who also supported us, trying our chalk drawings out and then giving us feedback during our surveys.  Thanks also to our BOT for their support and approval to make our Inquiry findings a reality. Ka pai!
